The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is an annual student survey that collects information from hundreds of four-year colleges around the nation about first-year and senior students’ participation empirically confirmed “good practices”, such as high-impact practices (HIPs), academic advising and support services, and academic challenge. The data from this survey allows Georgia Tech to gain a better understanding of the undergraduate experience both inside and outside the classroom. Findings from the NSSE allows OUE to leverage student-level data as we continue to improve and expand our offerings in undergraduate education.

 

The 2023 NSSE was completed by 564 first-year students and 1,025 seniors. A few highlights from this year’s findings:

  • 60% of first-year Georgia Tech students reported participating in a HIP, with 19% of these participating in more than one in their first year
  • 92% of Georgia Tech seniors reported participating in a HIP, with 72% of these students having participated in more than one
  • 88% of respondents (both first-year and seniors) rated their overall experience at Georgia Tech as either “excellent” or “good”
  • 90% of respondents (both first-year and seniors) indicated that they would “definitely” or “probably” attend Georgia Tech again

  • Seniors were asked how much of their experience at GT contributed to their knowledge, skills, and personal development in ten areas. The top 5 of these identified by our students were:
    • Thinking Critically and Analytically
    • Analyzing numerical and statistical information
    • Working effectively with others
    • Acquiring job- or work-related knowledge and skills
    • Solving complex real-world problems

The results also provide comparisons to other institutions in the American Association of Universities (AAU). Georgia Tech’s ratings were significantly higher than our AAU peers in the following engagement factors:

  • Academic Challenge – Quantitative Reasoning
  • Collaborative Learning
  • Discussions with Diverse Others
  • Effective Teaching Practices
  • Supportive Campus Environment
