Georgia Tech undergraduates Tanya Roysam and Alice Ponte were recently accepted into the Fulbright Canada Mitacs Globalink Program. A special program of Fulbright Canada, the award provides summer internship opportunities for undergraduates interested in pursuing advanced research in their academic discipline.

Roysam, a biomedical engineering student, plans to use her time at the University of British Columbia-Vancouver to advance her understanding of computational analysis to reveal the metabolic origins of cancer and ultimately develop more personalized cancer therapies. She was drawn to the Fulbright Canada Globalink program in part because she wanted to work in a research environment different from the one she is used to at Georgia Tech.

Computer science major Alice Ponte will pursue mathematics research at McMaster University, where she too is excited to learn more about how research is conducted outside of the United States. She will work with Dr. Jenna Rajchgot exploring pattern avoidance in a subset of the Schubert algebraic varieties.

In addition to working in top-tier research facilities, program participants are encouraged to take advantage of social and recreational opportunities during their 10- to 12-week stay. Roysam will spend the time exploring Vancouver’s parks and outdoor spaces and perhaps volunteer for local conservation efforts, and Ponte looks forward to exploring the town of Hamilton and surrounding cities.

Both students credit Prestigious Fellowships Advisor Karen Mura for making them aware of this opportunity.

The Fulbright Canada Mitacs Globalink Program supports the larger Fulbright goals of advancing knowledge and understanding in the world by promoting international study, research, and ambassadorship. In 2020-21, Fulbright Canada launched the Mitacs Globalink Program to expand their cultural exchange to include undergraduates with at least one semester of study remaining before graduation. Approximately 60 awards are granted each year.
