We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Vicki Birchfield as the Executive Director of the First-Year Semester Abroad (FYSA) Program, effective July 1, 2023. This 2-year appointment supplements her faculty position in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs.

In this leadership role for FYSA, Dr. Birchfield will help advance the Institute’s strategic priorities for global student experiences. She has a wealth of experience, including working with International Initiatives, Undergraduate Education, and Enrollment Management to help establish FYSA in 2020-2021. In addition to her scholarship, she has taught in residence at GT-Europe (GTE); leads the European Union and Transatlantic Relations study abroad program; and has served as Director of the European Union Center of Excellence from 2008 to 2011 and now co-directs the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies, a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence. She is a tenured full professor and has been a member of Georgia Tech’s faculty since 1999.

As Executive Director, Dr. Birchfield will work closely with Undergraduate Education, OIE, GTE leadership, and campus colleagues to oversee all aspects of the program, including the Global@Home, FYSA@Oxford, and FYSA@GTE components. She will also supervise the FYSA Program Manager and the two faculty directors.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Birchfield to her new role as Executive Director of the FYSA Program. We look forward to her continued leadership and contributions to Georgia Tech.

Best,
Amy Henry and Steven Girardot
