Francisco Castelan presents

Francisco Castelan (pictured above) and Shannon Dobranski delivered sessions at the biannual National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) Conference in Washington, D.C., June 27-July 1. Francisco served again on the planning committee for this national event, and he was a constant presence throughout the conference, introducing plenary speakers and stepping in wherever need to ensure that the program was seamless. In addition to helping plan the conference, Francisco co-presented at two sessions: "Navigating the Financial Aid Process from Application to Graduation: Helping Students Understand They Can Finance a Health Professions Education!" and "The Power of Connecting Underrepresented Students to Mentoring Opportunities." Francisco also coordinated the inclusion of leaders of professional student organizations in the conference's Health Professions Fair, and he brokered an advisors' tour of Howard University College of Medicine—the first such tour of an HBCU sponsored by NAAHP.

Shannon co-presented a session on "Collaborative Partnerships: Strategies for Managing Personal Statement Review and Events," and she participated in the Operation Gratitude service project. The conference had around 1400 in attendance.

OUE conference participants
OUE Conference Participants (above, from left to right): April Nolan (C2D2), Mysty Connelly (OVPUE), Crystal Folwer (UAA), Jamie Jones (SLS), Olga Kotlyar (CAE/CAS), and Katy Wong (OVPUE).

On August 16th, 2018, several OUE staff participated in SkillPath's: The Conference for Women. The conference is designed to help attendees develop themselves professionally and find fulfillment in everything they do. The one-day event was split into two tracks and had 10 sessions. Participants learned to: lead projects and people; resolve conflict; develop a passion for their work; and more.

Pre-Graduate and Pre-Professional Advising hosted a "Fulbright Personal Statement Review Session" July 13. At this session, seven students each received feedback from three different campus professionals--all in a single afternoon. Colleagues from OIE, INTA, CAS, MSE, and the Career Advising unit in C2D2 joined PGPP's Kathryn Meehan Quinto and Shannon Dobranski for the event. This year's review session was especially remarkable because five of the seven student participants joined remotely, via Skype.
